Each year in Canada, September 30th marks the commemoration of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
This day “honours the children who never returned home and the Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process”
(Government of Canada, 2022)
As National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is now observed by the closure of schools, GVC staff and students are invited to wear orange T-shirts and/or wear an “Every Child Matters” sticker on Friday, September 27th. Stickers will be available as students arrive at school in the morning for those who wish to honour and remember in this way.
