GVC Schedules for 2020-2021

We are finalizing schedules for students and teachers and will send them home in student report cards at the end of June.  As previously mentioned, we have two goals for fall.  We want to create class sizes that give students the highest chance for success.  We also want teachers to have their class lists in advance so they can prepare for any necessary recovery learning.  This means that there will be less room for changes than in previous years.

If there are errors or omissions to your schedule you can email your guidance counselor on after August 24 with the change you need made as well as how they can best contact you.

Update: June 12, 2020

Hello GVC Students and Families!

June has arrived and we are excited about the possibility of having you return in fall.  We would love to update you on how we are preparing.

  1. Physical Safety:  We are putting protocols in place to assist us in ensuring that each person who enters the building is aware of our safety procedures.
  2. Mental Health:
    1. We are continuing to support students in their pursuit of positive mental health by updating our GVC Guidance Instagram account with tools to assist in their pursuit.
    2. During our time apart, teachers have chosen to meet weekly to discuss the importance of caring for our mental health.
    3. Our teachers and the Student Services team are busy planning for how we can support you in a smooth transition to GVC.
  3. Preparing for Educational Success:  We carefully created a schedule for each student with the following in mind:
    1. Students will benefit the most from smaller class sizes.  We commit to trying to keep our classes as small as possible.
    2. Due to COVID-19 and remote learning, some of our students will need recovery learning.  Our teachers are working with their September class lists and are meeting with one another to learn how to best support each student’s learning.

The GVC staff is busy planning for the fall and are looking forward to seeing you all again soon.

As always, we want to hear from you.  If you have questions, concerns or ideas, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Update: May 20, 2020

GVC families,

We want you to know that we are continuing to think of you as you work together with our teachers to help motivate and educate your child. As the weather becomes more beautiful, it may become more difficult to help your teenager stay motivated.  That’s ok, we understand. We are all doing the best we can.

Here at GVC we are busy planning for graduation, creating schedules for next school year and planning for report cards.  We are also in the process of making some updates to student grades in PowerSchool.  You may find that grades are changing and mostly going up. Please be patient with us as we try to have these changes complete by Tuesday, May 26.

We want to encourage each student to continue to connect with their teachers and end their year strong.

Update: May 8, 2020

Hi Zodiacs!

We want you to know that we miss you every day. The halls are bare and quiet. The teachers are working really hard to keep you engaged and learning, but without seeing your nods and eyerolls it’s just not the same! We can’t wait to have you back home here with us again.

To our GVC Graduates of 2020:

We want you to know that we are thinking, planning, dreaming and scheming. We are looking for ways to celebrate you!   You are not forgotten.

We want to invite you all to a TEAM meeting on Tuesday, May 12 at 1:00.  This meeting replaces your regular grad meetings that you would have in The Zone with Mr. Neufeld.  Your guidance counselors, Mr. Neufeld and I will be there.  We don’t have a lot to share with you yet, but we are getting closer.

So……watch for you an invite and join on us on TEAMS Tuesday, May 12 at 1:00.

Update: April 30, 2020

Question of the Day:  Why does my mark on PowerSchool go below my mid-term mark? I thought that wasn’t supposed to happen.

I can see how this feels confusing.  Let me explain.

When you had your last day of classes on March 19th, we graded and put everything in PowerSchool that we had at that time.  That mark was then ‘frozen’.  The Department of Education asked us to make that your final grade for your June report card.  So, you will see in PowerSchool that your baseline mark is your Q3 mark.

From that point on we are still educating you by providing assignments and projects.  We are grading your work, providing some feedback and putting the marks in PowerSchool.

It’s important for you to know:

  • You may still get a zero on assigned work that doesn’t come in.  We do this so we can gauge what you are learning and which outcomes you have covered. The Department of Education is expecting us to provide a designation along with your final grade (Q3 mark).  The designation will say, “Recovery Work Required” or “No Recovery Work Required”.
  • When you see your S2 mark drop below your Q3 mark, this is an indication of what we are know about your learning since the March 19th cut-off
  • On your June report card, depending on which mark is higher, we will either:
    • Change your grade back to your Q3 (mid-term mark) OR
    • Keep your grade as your S2 mark.
    • We will then attach a designation of "Recovery Work Required” or “No Recovery Work Required” to your final grade.

Unfortunately, we still don’t have enough information from the Department of Education to know what will be required for students who require recovery work. We will update you all once we hear back from the department.

We are so proud of how you are choosing to keep in touch with your teachers.  Hang in there Zodiacs!  We are stronger together.- Mrs. F.

Update: April 22, 2020

Hello GVC Students:

The province of Manitoba has extended our state of emergency for another 4 weeks.  So, in response to this new information, we thought you may want your items from the lockers.  We will start on this next week.

We will continue to follow the Province of Manitoba’s guidelines and keep our building closed; however, we still want you to have access to your items.  So, here’s what you can expect from us:

  • We will empty your locker and place the contents into a labelled plastic bag.
  • A GVC staff member will contact you to let you know when we will send your items to your home via bus delivery.
  • If you would prefer to pick up the bag with your contents you can contact Mr. Brendan Neufeld to make arrangements.  (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

As always, we want to hear from you. Send your questions and suggestions to me. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Hello GVC Students and Families!

We want you to know that we are thinking of you!  We miss you every day.

Please continue to connect with your teachers and hand in your work.  We know that recovery work will be required for those of us who choose not to continue working at this time.

So…. we want to encourage you to continue working hard on your studies.  We may be apart, but we can do this together. – Mrs. Friesen

Update: April 7, 2020

As you know, last week the Minister of Education suspended classes indefinitely.  This means that students are expected to stay home and stay safe while working on the schoolwork provided by their teachers.  This does NOT mean that school is cancelled.  Please encourage your son or daughter to remain in contact with their teachers.  We are continuing to work hard to provide quality education for your child.

We know that you have a lot of questions and we will not have all the answers, but we will work hard to provide you with as much information as we can.

For now, if you have questions, please email me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  We will post an update at least once each day.

I look forward to hearing from you.
